Tampa: Motion

Some remarkable bodies doing some remarkable things is perhaps best to describe how NPC News Online's Tampa Fitness Backstage edit begins. Breathtaking stuff, but then there's a bit of a lull in the middle section - remarkable bodies not doing much more than listening to music and/or taking selfies. Then, quite unexpectedly, there they are - the FBB line-up about to take the stage. The big finish, you might say!

Hopefully, longer backstage edits of Figure, Physique and FBBing are to come, and hopefully too Maximum Muscle Report - who have footage of the evening show - will soon have all the FBBing and Physique routines up. For today, we've selected four that (at the time of writing) are already there, starting with LaDawn McDay.

LaDawn's 3rd place was the curious judging decision of the day. Nothing in her contest history suggested she would end up ahead of Kim Buck and Lisa Cross, so we were eager to see her routine for clues as to why this time was different. Kim Buck's routine is not, as yet, available, but we can compare 3rd place LaDawn with 4th place Lisa.

Lower down the placings, the most anticipated return to competition was Angela Salvagno's. It's a slightly odd experience to see her wearing something that she doesn't aggressively remove by the halfway stage, but we'll have to get used to it.

And we finish for today and this week with another come back Queen, and the champ on the night. Classy and poised as ever, Alina nevertheless came back with a little extra, something else - two things to be precise - we'll also just have to get used to.

Check out NPC News Online for more backstage edits (soon?), and Maximum Muscle Report for more of the FBB routines, as well as breathtaking Fitness performances.

Enjoy!

Tampa: Reckoning

So, yesterday's post - which you would have read after the event - was written last Friday - before any of the results were in, after I'd seen prejudging pics from the Figure and Physique divisions, but before any of the Female Bodybuilders had got on stage.

In the post I made a few predictions, or perhaps observations would be a better word. The main three were: 1. Autumn Swansen looked amazing; 2. Angela Salvagno - sensational during prep - sadly appeared not to have made the show; and 3. FBBing was probably going to amount to a showdown between Alina Popa and Lisa Cross.

Well, now we know... How did I do?

1. AUTUMN SWANSEN LOOKED AMAZING

imagebam.com

I was hardly going out on a limb, but - in a line-up of 35, remember - immediately noticing just how back-to-her-best Autumn was does give me a little bit of hope that I do talk sense from time to time. And - surprise surprise - the judges agreed with me!

imagebam.com imagebam.com
imagebam.com imagebam.com

It's not all about the placing, she wrote after disappointments earlier in the season in San Jose and Chicago. It's about the progress. Well, it all came together for her in Tampa, and Autumn got to go home with some money and a very big sword indeed.

imagebam.com imagebam.com

Her routines are always a pleasure. If only there was video...

No wardrobe malfunction this time!

2. NO ANGELA

imagebam.com

My assumption seemed reasonable at the time. Despite looking ridiculously ready about a week and a half before the show, Angie has had her health problems over the past few years, it didn't seem beyond the bounds of possibility that she'd be struck down as she attempted to peak. On top of that, there wasn't a single pic of Angie at the athletes' meeting or the check-in. She's hardly known for being camera shy, and there was also nothing from Tampa on her social media. So, I put two and two together...

imagebam.com

BOOM!

imagebam.com imagebam.com
imagebam.com imagebam.com

How wrong I was! Here she was, back on stage for the first time since 2015, and back as a Bodybuilder for the first time since the same Tampa Pro seven long years ago. Honestly, I don't think I've ever been so happy to be wrong. Angie, however, had mixed emotions. Everything was great except my placing, she said (on her updated after Friday Instagram). I still have carb issues, which killed my conditioning. She's not going to make us wait seven years again though. I’m back and I will not give up. I will get into the condition and have the size I need to compete at the top, she promised. I'm Angela Fucking Salvagno and I will be back next year!!!

Believe!

3. POPA-CROSS SHOWDOWN

imagebam.com

Not a one-two, but a one-four. If I'd predicted one or the other would win there'd be a big green tick above. Instead, I confidently imagined they would take first and second. So, with Pauline Nelson getting the runner's-up prize and (more surprisingly given her previous placings this year) LaDawn McDay claiming 3rd, it's a big red cross.

imagebam.com imagebam.com

Alina was, understandably, over the moon. For all her achievements, for all her fame and for all her many many fans, the premier Female Bodybuilder of the last decade had never won a pro title before last weekend. This is a special night for me, she wrote, holding her sword aloft (and incidentally, doesn't it look a lot smaller when she holds it than when Autumn does?) It's always a wonderful feeling to be a champion.

imagebam.com imagebam.com

Quite honestly, I'm surprised she can remember the feeling. It's been, in fact, ten years since at the World Amateur Championships Alina was actually judged the winner of a contest rather than been declared the should-have-been winner by us adoring fans.

imagebam.com imagebam.com
imagebam.com imagebam.com

A new experience for Alina, then, and a new experience for us as well - enhanced Alina on stage. The tut-tutters had already aired their views on the forums long before this show - "She was much better without implants," and so on. And there's also been doubt expressed in the wake of her victory that she'll be able to compete with Helle and Margie at the Rising Phoenix. Alina, it seems, has come back to a backlash!

imagebam.com imagebam.com

I'd advise those making predictions about the Rising Phoenix to proceed with caution! And anyway, Alina's back poses have hardly "lost" any shock and awe, have they?

So, to answer the question posed at the beginning of today's post, how did I do? Well, I got 1/3, which is even worse, according to the Meat Loaf scale, than "not bad".

I've got to cheer myself up somehow, and trawling through the many many images of the show seems like a good way to do that... More from Tampa on FMS tomorrow.

The Sexhibitionists: Angie Gets Her Bod Back

For what must be about five years, uber-sexibitionist (and some time IFBB pro competitor) Angela Salvagno has struggled with digestive issues. They left her "feeling bloated and sick" every time she ate carbs, which is obviously far from ideal for a Bodybuilder. While it didn't stop her continuing to make her (rightly legendary) pay-per-view output, the thought of ever competing again or even returning to her (thrilling) more ripped look was, by her own admission, an impossible dream.

She tried all number of remedies. Raw fish every day was one I recall, nothing but "bone broth" for 10 days another. Neither of those or any of the diets she was advised to go on worked, at least until she found Florida Alternative Medicine. You don’t realize how lucky you are to be able to eat certain foods like veggies, rice, or any kind of carbs for that matter until it’s taken away from you, she wrote. That's when you realize eating those simple kinds of carbs was actually pretty damn amazing, and wish you could have that chance again. Florida Alternative Medicine changed my life. I've got that chance again, and I'm savouring every little bite.

If only for all the pleasure Angie has given me over the years, I was happy to hear she was healthy and enjoying eating again. But the effect of this new diet on her body has been nothing short of spectacular. And she loves it almost as much as I do.

imagebam.com

It's nice to finally see my abs ripped like I use to be able to, she announced recently. Them and my obliques as well! Veins too are popping out at unexpected times for unexpected reasons. It is, as she tells it, something like a miracle. Damn! she writes. Never thought a salad would give me veins in my abs but hey I’ll take it!

imagebam.com

Of course, Angie's social media is only ever a window onto what you can get for your dollars elsewhere, only ever the prelude to what you have to pay for, but it's also where she communicates most effectively with her wider fanbase, and the news is she's feeling so good she's going to compete at the Tampa Pro at the start of August...

This will be Angie's first contest since 2015 I believe, but the really exciting news is that unlike then, she won't be competing in Physique. Instead, and for the first time since she came 6th in Tampa in 2011, she'll be returning to Bodybuilding!

Favourites Fortnight

Favourite Angie Salvagno Quotes

Once in a while, that incorrigible potty-mouth Angela Salvagno does, in the course of one of her very naughty video clips, say something that I actually want to hear.

I've picked a top 5. Enjoy!

imagebam.com imagebam.com

My muscles are bigger than most guys'. And I love it. I love showing off my muscles, and I love watching people's reaction. They always ask to touch my muscles. They wanna feel how hard they are. And I let 'em. I let 'em touch these arms. And once they touch, once they feel how hard they are, they wanna keep on touching 'em.

imagebam.com

I have to tell you I absolutely love, LOVE my muscles. Every time I look at myself I get so turned on by them. They are SO sexy. Big... hard... and they feel SO good.

imagebam.com imagebam.com
imagebam.com imagebam.com

Me in a wedding dress with my muscles, walking down the aisle. As I move, you hear the threads of the dress ripping, and the more I move the bigger my muscles get. They just expand through that white dress. Walking in high shoes down the aisle. These thighs stretching my tight white nylons till they practically come right off. What do you think your family would do as my muscles grow bigger and bigger?

imagebam.com imagebam.com

You want it. You wanna touch it, you wanna feel it. You wanna worship me, don't you? You wanna get on your knees and worship every inch of my powerful muscular body. You wanna feel this strong, powerful body all day long, don't you?

I love being a muscle freak. Fuck I LOVE being a muscle freak!!!

Prof. Pennypacker's Pectarium

imagebam.com

Pennypacker on download limits
If there is anything more irritating in this new world than the ridiculous imposition of daily download limits then I have yet to find it. I pay my subscription, set my program in motion and within the hour it has all come to a juddering halt. 'You have reached your daily limit for download'. Incensed, I fired off several emails and received replies ranging from the unsympathetic to the downright rude. XXXXXX [name removed for legal reasons] simply refunded my membership and as good as asked me not to bother them again. The nerve! Now I have no option but to seek out their material through not strictly legal means via my ever-growing list of (ever-generous) contacts. A ridiculous state of affairs. In future, I will simply write to websites and ask them to quote a price for their entire back archive.

At the time of his death, the professor was a paid-up member of six clip and photo websites and no fewer than twenty-eight websites belonging to individual female bodybuilders. We can only guess at the number of photo websites he had been a member of previously, though his archives suggest that at one time or another he had subscribed to all of them, and had paid for access to the members sections of quite literally hundreds of individual websites.

from Pennypacker's diary 19th June 2011
Debit card blocked due to 'unusual activity' according to the peon I spoke to (no doubt in some call centre on the other side of the planet). Had to ring another peon to assure them that, yes, I had authorised the payments and would they please unblock my card. After I'd calmed down (thanks to some archived Sondra Faas), for no other reason than my own personal amusement I called the manager at my branch direct and asked at what point my spending had become 'unusual'.

Whether or not Pennypacker's spending was 'unusual' or not, it was certainly copious. A statistician by profession and calling, he noted, some time in late 2012, the amount of money he calculated that he had spent on website subscriptions, pay-per-view clips and private cam shows until that point. The figure he arrived at was £7,650. In addition, he had donated £2,500 to individual bodybuilders to help with expenses, and spent almost £5,000 on state-of-the-art IT with which to 'indulge my passion'.

imagebam.com

But rather than that being a cause to rein in his spending, Pennypacker instead rejoiced at the fact that he had the means to not only continue spending this way indefinitely, but could, in fact, increase his outlay without the slightest worry. 'Since the success of the first book I have had money but never knew what (or who) to spend it on,' he wrote. 'Now, at last, its purpose is clear.'

And the spending did not stop there. It was revealed during the legal battle over his will that the final cost for the construction of The Pectarium from first surveys to the final electrical installations broke the £200,000 mark.

imagebam.com

from Pennypacker's diary 13th May 2012
They [the builders etc.] wonder what this thing they have made is. Most of them believe it is a place in which I will conduct scientific experiments or has something to do with 'gaming'. I wonder, if I did tell them, would one or two (or more) want to come back and experience it for themselves? I would gladly let them. I find to my surprise that I have designed the whole thing to be a private yet (potentially) shared experience without ever once realising it. My subconscious obviously craves to have like-minded company to enjoy my archive with. Perhaps I should start advertising on the forums: "Come see The Pectarium. Available now for weekend breaks/long stays. Groups welcomed." Ha!

The idea of turning The Pectarium into some kind of holiday camp for female muscle lovers may or may not have been one that the professor would have pursued. We will never know. Within weeks of his first 'glorious' night within its walls, he fell ill...
