Svensk Muskel: Linnéa Fransson

THE CROSSFITTER

imagebam.com

Swell, Swell, 6 foot 1 inches tall,
Who is the fairest Crossfitter of them all?

Linnéa, Linnéa, my Swedish princess,
You aren't top of the rankings but you're the best!

imagebam.com imagebam.com

While Swell sits under that tree over there and continues to churn out what he calls "his epic poem to his Swedish Crossfit goddess" but what the rest of us call a collection of rhyming couplets so bad they constitute a crime against the English language, FMS is fortunate to be able to call upon the keen eye of our resident Crossfit expert.

Aiden says: I had seen pics but she blended in with the horde of Scandinavians...

OK... well, perhaps we should just introduce her ourselves, then...

imagebam.com

She's 1.68m (5'5") and just over 60kg (9½st, 132lbs). She's from Mariestad in the province of West Gothland, where the biggest of Sweden's lakes are. As the beginning of Swell's "poem" suggested, Linnéa didn't make it to the Crossfit Games in 2014, but as she's just 21, the best years of her Crossfit career are surely yet to come.

imagebam.com

Aiden says: I think maybe even more so than Camille (who is very photogenic but everyday women may say too bulky), Linnéa, on the other hand, hits the points "most" women think they need to adhere to, ie. 1. Abs, 2. "Toned" arms, 3. Blonde, 4. Slimmish not blocky or strong looking. At 21 she has a lot of development to do, and looks get sponsorships but not championships.

Svensk Muskel: Retro Muskel

EWA ERIKSSON, 1995

From back when you merely had to switch on Eurosport on a Friday evening to have a reasonable chance of seeing some female muscle on your telly, today's svensk muskel kvinna is one of the best the country has ever had: the great Ewa Eriksson.

At 1.76m (5'9") and with her amazing muscles, she is one of the few real heavyweights we've had, says her profile on Body.se. She should have turned pro.

Today's gem is from Ewa's first international competition, the 1995 IFBB Europeans. She finished 5th in her class, which kind of makes me want to check out the top 4 - because they must have had something special going on to place higher than Ewa!

You might also like to check out another clip starring a positively Amazonian-looking off-season Ewa. She gets measured at a furniture store (really!) before we watch her stroll up and down the street in heels... Guess you are already there!

Svensk Muskel: Ronja Henmyr

I'm not a fitness girl. I only have a crush for iron.

imagebam.com

I first came across 26-year-old Ronja on the peerless PumpItUp's Female Muscle at the beginning of last year. I was floored, not just by those big biceps, but also by her stunning, sultry beauty. And I wasn't alone in my appreciation. The forum boards lit up for her briefly but brightly. What a perfect and beautiful woman! said one (thoroughly representative) post. "Love her arms!" "Luscious!" "Amazing!" said others.

imagebam.com imagebam.com
imagebam.com imagebam.com

The fact that the buzz has died down significantly is probably due to the fact that Ronja is not interested in photo shoots. She's not interested in competing. She's not interested in becoming a pro, and doesn't see bodybuilding as a career to follow.

imagebam.com

By the time PumpItUp had alerted me to Ronja's charms, she had already made her one and only competitive appearance. At the December Cup in Sweden in (surprise, surprise) December 2013 she finished 6th in the Women's Physique Division.

imagebam.com imagebam.com
imagebam.com imagebam.com

She revealed on her Instagram that it was not an experience she wanted to go through again. It feels so good to just take the day as it comes. I'm thankful that I carried through the competition. But I have realized that it's not my thing to compete. I don't feel the dedication for the sport like so many other people do. Too much hard work for such a long period of time and my body and mind reacted very badly. And I had to cut a lot of people out of my life temporarily... I don't feel that it's worth it.

imagebam.com

Clearly there is a link here to Ronja's (slightly younger and better-known) contemporary Sexy Sophie Arvebrink, who also shows no desire to compete. We could also draw a parallel with one of Ronja's biggest inspirations, FMS fave Heidi Vuorela (Finnish, but based in Sweden), who, like Ronja, has competed, but doesn't seem interested in doing so again. I'm still very impressed by all the people that do compete in this. It's fascinating, says Ronja. But I just want to feel free as a spirit. Eat a lot of food and eat whatever I want. And lift heavy as hell at the gym. Maybe I will compete in something else. But for now you won't see me on that stage again.

imagebam.com imagebam.com
imagebam.com imagebam.com

In the meantime, Ronja is content to be to others what Heidi Vuorela is to her: I hope to inspire at least 1 person to a healthier lifestyle. With over 5,000 Instagram followers, I think it's safe to say that this beautiful, and in many ways archetypal, young Swedish female bodybuilder has already achieved that and much much more.

Svensk Muskel: Hanna Öberg

imagebam.com

At 1.57m (a touch over 5'1") Hanna Öberg demonstrates that good things come in small packages, or bra saker kommer i små paket as (I believe) they say in Sweden.

imagebam.com imagebam.com
imagebam.com imagebam.com

A former football player, Hanna started strength training in 2008. This came to be my only hobby, and football was left on the shelf after just a year, she says. I started to keep a training diary and the gym became my refuge. Then after a few years I decided I wanted to get on the diet for real and the results started to come.

imagebam.com

At first, Hanna competed in Athletic Fitness, which in Sweden, it seems, involves rounds where the women do chin-ups, dips and a flat-out minute on the rowing machine, as well as a 'physique' (posing) round. But last year she decided to switch to the Bodyfitness division, admitting to feeling "super nervous" about the prospect of having to walk on the stage in heels. T-walk... OMG! Nervous is the right word. Last year it was easier. Black bikini, barefoot, and NO T-WALK!

imagebam.com

All the heel-walking practice paid off though. At the Luciapolken (Lucia Trophy) show in Gothenburg in December, Hanna finished 2nd in her class (the shortest!).

imagebam.com imagebam.com

Last Sunday, wrote Hanna during her preparation for the contest, I put an image on Instagram five weeks after the previous image. It is precisely these kinds of contrasting images that provide as much motivation as anything to just keep doing it - the early power walks, the post-workout cardio - to see how the hard work at the gym delivers results and see how my body is changing from week to week.

Svensk Muskel: Historia

The FMS editor may still believe that I spent the best part of 2014 doing nothing more than "stalking" Sexy Sophie Arvebrink, but the truth is somewhat different. During my time in the land of ABBA and Volvos (and Sophie) I admit that, yes, I may have spent longer than was absolutely necessary locating and frequenting the very gym where the divine Ms Arvebrink trains, but I also took the opportunity to do some extensive research into Swedish female muscle both past and present.

I hope readers will enjoy the fruits of my labours as we spend our first week back in 2015 with
Den Muskel Kvinnor i Sverige - The Muscle Women of Sweden.

HISTORIA

Who, I wondered, is the most successful Swedish female bodybuilder ever?

imagebam.com imagebam.com
imagebam.com imagebam.com

The first name and the first muscles that came to mind was Klaudia Larson and her once-seen-never-forgotten bicep peaks. Klaudia was active as a pro from about 2006, and she had a few top 3 finishes in big pro shows, but her beautiful physique never graced either the Ms International or Ms Olympia before her retirement in 2009.

imagebam.com imagebam.com
imagebam.com imagebam.com

So, thinking she must have fared better, I looked into the career of the self-styled "Viking" of Swedish female muscle, gorgeous Marika-ka-ka-ka Johansson. If success is measured in longevity, Marika certainly has Klaudia beat. In a decade-long amateur career, Marika's finest hour came at the Jan Tana Amateur (Jan Tana Amateur! - how times have changed!), where, one of four heavyweights, she won her class. She turned pro around 2005, but failed to place higher than 4th in any of her six pro outings.

If neither of the best-known, the most obvious candidates fitted the 'most successful ever' bill, and with the sole active Swedish female IFBB Pro Bodybuilder, Frida Palmell, now competing in Physique, clearly I needed to go further back.

imagebam.com imagebam.com
imagebam.com

I came across Birgitta (or Brigitta, or Gittan) Hallstrom (or Karlsson, or Karlsson-Hallstrom). As you can probably guess from the myriad names she is/has been known by, I didn't find a lot of information about her - and to be perfectly honest I'm not 100% sure that all of these names refer to the same woman! She appears to have been active from the late 1990s, and her muscle CV includes a Ms International appearance (1998). She is still, apparently, involved in Swedish bodybuilding. But in spite of my lack of definitive sources on Brigitta (/Birgitta/Gittan), I couldn't resist posting an image of this vision of old school muscular beauty - whatever her name may be!

I read around. Jesper Andreasson and Thomas Johansson's 1998 book, The Global Gym, told me that "In Sweden, interest in bodybuilding increased among women in the beginning of the 1980s". So I went back to that decade, and, unexpectedly (to me, anyway) it was there I found Sweden's champions of female muscle, Sweden's Ms Olympia contestants, and Sweden's most successful ever female bodybuilder.

imagebam.com

One of only two Swedish women to win her class at the IFBB World Championships, Veronica Dahlin was the 1988 Middleweight champion. It was a obviously a vintage year - Laura Creavalle won the heavyweight class, Janet Tech the lightweight.

Even further back, two Olympia contestants whose names were new to me - Carina Johansson (who didn't place in 1984) and who, sadly, I haven't been able to find a single image of), and Lena Trulsson. Lena was the first ever Swedish woman to compete at the Ms O, in 1982, and, more happily, there are a couple of images of Lena out there, as well as a Strength & Health magazine cover from 1984.

imagebam.com imagebam.com

And, best of all, I found the woman who has, I think, the best claim to be called the most successful Swedish female bodybuilder ever - Inger Zetterqvist.

imagebam.com

A national level junior swimmer, Inger started bodybuilding in 1979. Two years later, she competed and finished fourth at the Swedish National Championships. She returned in 1983 and won the title. It was the start of a very good year for her.

imagebam.com imagebam.com
imagebam.com imagebam.com

She won the IFBB European heavyweight title, and then, at the first IFBB World Championships to feature the women, she repeated that feat. At the Ms Olympia, she finished 3rd (behind Carla Dunlap and Candy Csencsits) - by far the highest ever placing by a Swede, and still one of the ten best ever finishes by a European.

imagebam.com

She never achieved such heights again, one more Olympia in 1984 (she finished 15th). Nevertheless, as far as the Swedish online bodybuilding resource Body.se is concerned, her Swedish Muscle Queen crown has never slipped. Although her career was unnecessarily short, and she has been extremely quiet since, she will remain in our memories. We hope that one day a new, similar talent will emerge in modern times. But will it be possible to beat Inger's record-breaking feats in 1983?

imagebam.com

These days, of course, there's a lot less "bodybuilding" and a lot more other stuff. If the Swedish bodybuilding community is waiting for another female bodybuilder to match Inger, they may have a long wait. But having said that, it's undeniable that Sweden's got female muscle talent, and for the rest of the week we'll be meeting some of it. Njut!
