Around the World: Iran

Around the World will be an occasional series celebrating the female bodybuilders of a particular country, and examining any issues peculiar to muscle women there.

Today, we bring you a somewhat depressing update on the situation in Iran.

imagebam.com

Now I guess all of us would like female muscle to gain more mainstream acceptance in our own countries, but the situation for Iranians should remind us that we should perhaps count our blessings a little more often, because the chances are at least female bodybuilding isn't - to all intents and purposes - ILLEGAL where you live.

imagebam.com

The official website of Iranian judiciary reported last week that a number of what it referred to as "half-naked female Iranian pseudo-athletes" have been summoned to court, according to the English-language Iranian Radio Zamaneh.

Their crime? Participating in a bodybuilding competition.

Naturally this competition didn't take place in Iran, where female bodybuilding is considered - even (officially) by the Iranian Bodybuilding Federation - to be "at odds with the values of the Islamic Republic and the dignity of women".

imagebam.com imagebam.com

You couldn't make it up.

It's all about the Islamic Republic's enforcement of the so-called "Islamic" dress code for women. Basically, any activity that requires them to shed the hijab is forbidden.

Even if the shedding takes place outside Iran.

In a series of interviews with Iranian FBBs after the announcement of the charges, dissident news source Shahrvand reported that five years ago as many as six women were fined and had their passports confiscated as they attempted to travel to Dubai to take part in a fitness competition. Now the situation seems even more precarious.

Iranian women who have chosen to participate internationally can no longer return to the country, according to "Samira", a female bodybuilder of 38 who has been training for 18 years and works as a coach in Tehran. "Neda", another Iranian FBB, is currently planning to escape and compete in the US. She told Shahrvand that there is no place for women’s bodybuilding or even physical fitness in Iran.

The national bodybuilding federation is (quite understandably) towing the official line, pleading that they were ignorant of the women travelling abroad, suspending the four coaches involved, and promising not only to abide by the judges' decision on the matter, but also to impose its own disciplinary sanctions on the women.

And yet...

imagebam.com imagebam.com

Iranian women still defiantly go to the gyms (that will have them) and build muscle.

Their bodies, you might say, are their protest.

And I'd tell you who they were if I wasn't so worried that some spook of the Islamic Republic might be reading these very words, but one place you can find some still pumping up in Iran is the Iranian Muscle Girls Society on Facebook.

Hall of Fame: Bernie's Wardrobe Malfunction

Question: What do Michelle Baker in a purple dress, Juliette Bergmann in a see through top and frilly skirt, Debbie Muggli's and Sophie Duquette's bums, Christina Rhodes in orange, and the Abs & Thigh pose have in common?

Answer: They're all in FMS' Female Muscle Hall of Fame.

Now, it's been a bit quiet on the Hall of Fame front for over a year.

Time for something new. Well, actually fairly old school.

A moment at the NABBA Universe in 1990 starring British female muscle legend (and 1992 NABBA Ms Universe) Bernadette "Bernie" Price, a posing suit that refuses to play ball, and a sight that would have scored extra points from this judge if only...

The best thing about it (for me) is that Bernie realises her right pec is au naturel quite a while before she puts it away but keeps going until she can fix it when her back is to the judges and audience. You can see the moment when she thinks about popping it back in then decides to carry on regardless. It's at about the 20-second mark - she almost pulls out of the pose, hesitating for a beat, then she continues as planned.

That's your Hall of Fame moment right there!

I only recently became aware of Bernie's pectacular performance recently, thanks to the hard work of a couple of members of the forum whose first rule is, and their knowledge and archive and their sharing of it should not go unacknowledged. So, it is with thanks to "the street fighter" for the gifs and "bigdee35" for the clip that we welcome Bernie and her glorious wardrobe malfunction to the FMS Hall of Fame.

Suggestions please!

FBBUK @ACE 2016

imagebam.com

The last of three visits to the Arnold Classic Europe celebrates the achievements of British ladies there, and there was more than is customary to celebrate.

So large was the UK contingent that we don't have time or space to see or mention them all, but we'll see as many as is possible in every division.

BIKINI

Junior

Whiteley Davies (left) - 6th (up to 163cm class)
Ieva Motiejunaite - 4th (over 163cm class)

imagebam.com imagebam.com

Up to 172cm

The UK was particularly well-represented in the second tallest of the many Bikini classes, with British Bikini babes being awarded the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd places.

Anastasia Parikos (left) - 4th
Emma Howie - 3rd

Alla Meyer - 2nd

I don't follow Bikini but...

WOW!

FITNESS

Up to 163cm

Another bumper class for the UK - four women in the top ten including the winner...

Maggie Molyneaux (left) - 9th
Kate Errington - 6th

I hope you won't mind if we have another look at Kate.

Vicki Gale - 4th

imagebam.com

Emma Paveley - 1st

imagebam.com

It's been coming, and FMS has been tipping Ms Paveley to break through into the pro ranks for some time now. Finally, a first place to go along with all her other podium finishes, though unfortunately for Emma, she didn't win the Overall title.

Still, many congratulations to her.

imagebam.com imagebam.com

And it's good to see her win has got some local press at least!

Over 163cm

Megan Hookins - 7th

BODYFITNESS

Up to 158cm

Nancy Jones - 5th

Up to 163cm

Samantha Forbes - 3rd

Up to 168cm

Melissa Nicola - 5th

imagebam.com imagebam.com

Over 168cm

Connie Slyziute - 6th

Connie also got a 3rd place in the Junior Bodyfitness class.

There were many other British ladies in the various Bodyfitness classes who we don't have space to show you but we should mention nonetheless. Barbara Kiss took 7th in the up to 163cm class, with Rebecca Caydas and Clare Barks cruelly unplaced. Michelle Leach was 10th in the up to 168cm class, and Natasha McFarlane (8th) and Caroline Caine (10th) competed with Connie Slyziute over 168cm along with Hannah-Marie Berry and Lisa Kelly, both of whom did not place.

And meanwhile...

Masters

Michelle Leach cropped up again and took 10th place in this Open Masters class.

imagebam.com imagebam.com

And NABBA veteran Sally Knights (left) and Julie Tomkins also competed.

imagebam.com imagebam.com

But the best British result in all the Bodyfitness classes was that of Katalin Jasztrab.

imagebam.com imagebam.com

Katalin finished Masters runner-up. She's a former Playboy model, would you believe?

PHYSIQUE

Sadly, we haven't been able to find a single picture of Ivana Mahrikova, formerly of Slovakia, now competing for the UK, who came in 9th in the taller Physique class.

Masters

imagebam.com imagebam.com

A familiar face, and although it's on top of a slightly smaller and less disgustingly peeled body, yes, that's former UKBFF Female Bodybuilding champ Silvana Imbrogno, back on stage and flexing it open-handed for Britain in the Masters Physique class. Silvana got 4th, and what a treat it is to see her back again.

Congratulations to all the British women who did us proud in Barcelona!

Enjoy!
